contemporary house architecture - by michel a. laflamme architect - revelstoke, british columbia

context: this custom-designed contemporary house is located at the edge of a bluff in spectacular revelstoke british columbia near the newly expanded revelstoke mountain ski resort.

program: main residence for a family with 3 children

  • the client wants the house to capture the breathtaking views and sun exposure

challenge: in our initial conversation the client expressed an admiration for the architecture of world renowned john lautner

design concept: not only to create a clear layout that takes full advantage of the site's attributes, but also to enhance the occupant's sensorial experience towards that site

result: the house's layout takes advantage of 270° views, enabling all surrounding mountains to be seen: mt mckenzie, mt bebgie, mt tilley, and mt mcpherson

  • the view court hangs over the ridge giving one the feeling of a bird soaring over the valley below
  • the sun deck, with hot tub, captures both sunrise and sunsets

architectural expression: rectilinear plan complemented by curvilinear roof

  • upon testing many roof variations, we opted for single slope with the south elevation inflecting toward the view and the sun while directing snow drifts northward
  • the curves are inspired by the soft form of snow covered revelstoke winter landscape

design team: michel a. laflamme and ron mikulik
structural engineer: parallel consulting structural engineers ltd
