To take full advantage of this beautiful property, the bulk of the program was distributed to the sides in two skinny blocks, thus creating an open space for the living room. The living room serves as a connection between the front and rear yard, which provides and reinforces an interrupted visual flow.

architecture hawaii house Bruce Dunbar Arthur Erikson picture 1

5 houses | 1 client

In January 1991, after four unsuccessful attempts with different Architects, Bruce Dunbar walked into the offices of Arthur Erickson & Nick Milkovich Architects. Mr. Dunbar (then artist manager) and his wife Christine (dancer & choreographer) owned a spectacular waterfront property near Makena Beach on Maui but just couldn't find the right scheme for their future home. Shortly after Mr. Erickson's visit to the site, Mr.Dunbar was back in the office, this time to go over the conceptual drawings and model. Upon a quick review of the scheme, it was clear he had found the right outfit. what followed is a twelve year relationship between myself, then Project Architect, and a client with a knack for acquiring uniquely challenging properties. The result is a variety of resort homes all over America, ranging from ultra-modern in Hawaii to conservative in Michigan. (see 5 houses here below)

Given the magnificent location, on Makena's sunny coastline, our ultimate goal here was to provide our client with the ideal backdrop to this spectacular natural environment. To accomplish this task, we used retractable glass walls to erase the divide between indoor and outdoor. Also, the swimming pool, with its infinity edge, runs the full length of the house to reflect the surrounding views. Finally, sober materials were used throughout, so as not to compete with commanding views of the nearby islands of Molokini and Lanai. The result is a powerful yet intimate connection to the elements, providing the owner with an experience not unlike standing on the prow of a ship. In spite of its massive cantilevers, explosive 14,000 watt sound system and high-tech devices, this technological tour de force always manages, through intregration of all its components, to remain both elegant and discreet in its appearance. The wood paneling and cabinets fashioned from English Sycamore greatly contribute to the abode's warmth and coziness.

Michel Laflamme, Project Architect

The first of two houses in beautiful Telluride, Colorado, Winterleaf is located on a tiny ski-in/ski-out zero-setback property which provides a spectacular 270° view of the surrounding mountains, from the ski slope all the way down the valley. Given the small footprint of the lot, we were forced to distribute the program elements over four floors. Locating daytime activities on the level above all the bedrooms, combined with wall-to-wall windows guaranteed the precious views would remain unobstructed. All interior woodwork (windows, cabinets and built-ins) are made of smooth vertical grain B.C. Fir, complementing nicely the rough-sawn wood floors. In spite of restrictive local guidelines that required large expanses of stucco and punched windows to mimick the look of Swiss cottages, we managed a more relevant expression through the use of 'post & beam' construction.

Michel Laflamme Architect

This spectacular site, perched on top of a high ridge overlooking the beautiful ski town of Telluride, required special attention. The challenge here was to provide the client with the best possible view of the valley over the ridge, at the far end of the property. Given the long, steep and narrow dimensions of the lot, the task proved most difficult. First, we opted to spread the program elements over five stories following the contours of the property. This allowed us to keep the footprint to a minimum width, saving as many Aspen trees as possible. Then, we reserved the best views for the living room by placing it on the top floor to give it a pavilion-like feeling. Due to the high altitude and damaging exposure to UVs, expansive overhangs were needed to provide the necessary protection. A large central skylight cuts through the roof to compensate for the loss of direct sunlight. This special feature consists of a ceramic-baked glass assembly with protruding fins which filters and reflects the light softly and evenly to its core.

architecture glass house palm beach

glass house, palm beach, florida

Michel Laflamme Architect
with Arthur Erickson, Design Consultant

Fresh back from a trip to Florence, our client approached us with an unusual request: a house designed in the manner of a Florentine Palace. What he implied was a layout that was both introverted and distributed around a courtyard. What really made it interesting, was that in spite of the conservative plan requirements, he asked for the expression to be most contemporary. Given the introverted nature of the project, we achieved full privacy by surrounding the property with a tall sculpted berm crowned with a hedge, enabling us to use glass exclusively as the building envelope. This design breakthrough allowed us to increase the privacy zone all the way to the property lines. We situated the 'Piano Nobile', or main floor, as prescribed by the Renaissance movement, one storey above the entrance and organized the bedrooms around the courtyard at ground level. A ring of ten magnificent 25-foot-tall sandblasted aluminum pillars create an umbrella-like effect. This along with a shallow moat, which wrap the house on three sides, help to keep the surroundings cool. Finally, a lap pool running along the ocean view completes the composition.

architecture lighthouse, bay harbour, michigan

Lighthouse, Bay Harbor, Michigan

Michel Laflamme Architect

Located on the shores of Lake Michigan, this property was completely flat and barren, and unlike others, presented no particular challenge. However, the Design Review Board would turn out to be much more to deal with than any steep slopes or rugged terrain. So restrictive were their guidelines that a discouraged Arthur Erickson would eventually pull out as Design Consultant. Given the limitations forced on us, the result is a sentimental journey down memory lane, incorporating dormers and porches to create an ensemble that still manages to take full advantage of the lake view and the sun on opposite sides. Added to the mix is a 'ligthouse' anchoring the North-East corner which serves as a beacon to the marina entry across the bay. Particular attention to planning and a strong emphasis on the detailing of all interiors will most certainly prove to be the true features of this unusual home.

accessories design and approach

background

Michel A. Laflamme has had his own practice, Michel A. Laflamme Architect, since 1996. Graduating with the highest distinction, he studied architecture at Laval University in Quebec City. Prior to venturing on his own, he spent the majority of his career working with architects Arthur Erickson & Nick Milkovich.

Laflamme's approach towards design is to combine light and material, according to function and context, in a way that extracts the essentials of a building or an object. His extensive experience on high end residential projects, has allowed him to explore design in its entirety. Moreover, working on architectural projects for the last twenty years, where every design element was stripped down to its bare minimum, has bolstered his beliefs for clarity in design. Recently, inspired by his clients' consistent demand for custom designed objects, he has developed his own line of home accessories under the name of malDesign. Michel a. laflamme architect is based in vancouver, b.c., canada.
